Grading the answers with RAGAS
The rag-langchain project followed questions through the pipeline. This page grades the pipeline’s answers: a second LLM (the judge) checks every answer against the chunks that were retrieved for it. Every value below is real output from the last npm run eval. Answers: openai/gpt-5-mini. Judge: openai/gpt-4o-mini.
Prepare the samples
Steps 1–3 run in TypeScript (src/1-export.ts), because that’s where the pipeline is. Steps 4–7 run in Python (eval/2_score.py), because RAGAS is a Python library. Between them sits one file, output/eval/samples.jsonl.
Write questions with the behaviour you expect
An evaluation is only as good as its questions. Each one is labelled: should the data answer it, or should the model say it doesn’t know? The “don’t know” ones include tempting questions the model could answer from its own training, but our data can’t.
eval/questions.json → [{ "question": "...", "expect": "answer" | "refuse", "notes": "..." }]
| # | Question | Expect | Why it’s in the set |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Which artists blend hip hop with R&B, and what are some of their albums? | answers | Multi-artist, the rag-langchain stage 4 example |
| 2 | Where is Fela Kuti from, and what kind of music did he make? | answers | Single artist, facts are in the profile chunk |
| 3 | When did Daft Punk start, and what country are they from? | answers | Begin date and country fields |
| 4 | Name some K-pop groups and one release by each. followed below | answers | BTS and BLACKPINK |
| 5 | Which artists in the data are from Nigeria? | answers | Fela Kuti, Burna Boy, Wizkid |
| 6 | Who are some classic soul singers, and when did they start their careers? | answers | Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin |
| 7 | What are some Latin music artists and their albums? | answers | Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Shakira, Daddy Yankee |
| 8 | Who are the members of BTS? | says “don’t know” | Tempting: the model knows, but member names aren't in the data |
| 9 | How many Grammy awards has Beyoncé won? | says “don’t know” | Tempting: awards aren't in the data |
| 10 | Which Daft Punk album sold the most copies? | says “don’t know” | Tempting: sales aren't in the data |
| 11 | What is the capital of Australia? | says “don’t know” | Off-topic |
| 12 | What is the best way to learn the guitar? | says “don’t know” | Off-topic, music-flavoured |
Run each question through the RAG pipeline
The usual RAG steps: retrieve the top 6 chunks, fill the prompt, call the LLM. From here on the page follows question 4.
const hits = await vectorStore.similaritySearchWithScore(question, 6);
const messages = await ragPrompt.formatMessages({ context: formatContext(docs), question });
const response = await model.invoke(messages);
Name some K-pop groups and one release by each.
Retrieved chunks (cosine distance)

The answer
Artists used: BLACKPINK; BTS - BLACKPINK — BOOMBAYAH (2016) - BTS — WINGS (2016)
Save it as a RAGAS sample
RAGAS expects fixed field names. Faithfulness needs three of them: the question, the retrieved chunks and the answer. (The fourth, reference, a hand-written correct answer, is only needed by the retrieval metrics we skipped.) expect is our own label, passed through.

The judge
Each step below is one LLM call to the judge model, with a fixed prompt. The judge returns JSON, which RAGAS reads into the verdicts. Expand a prompt to see exactly what the judge was sent.
Did it answer, or say it doesn’t know?
A RAGAS DiscreteMetric: our own prompt, and the judge must pick one of a fixed set of values and give a reason. This runs first, because it decides whether faithfulness applies at all. Answers that are only “I don’t know based on the data.” (plus the “Artists used” line) skip the judge: a rule marks them refused, because the small judge kept misreading them.
Reason: The response provides specific K-pop groups and one release by each, fulfilling the requirement to answer the question.
Prompt sent to the judge (768 chars)
A music Q&A assistant may only answer from its dataset. When the dataset doesn't cover a question, it should say it doesn't know. Question: Name some K-pop groups and one release by each. Response: Artists used: BLACKPINK; BTS - BLACKPINK — BOOMBAYAH (2016) - BTS — WINGS (2016) Score 'answered' if the response gives any answer from the data, even a partial one that says some of the question isn't covered. Score 'refused' only if it gives no answer at all, just that it doesn't know. A line that only lists the artists it looked at (like 'Artists used: X') is not an answer. Example: 'Artists used: Adele\n\nI don't know based on the data.' -> refused Example: 'Artists used: Adele, Sia\n\n- Adele: 21 (2011)\n- Sia: I don't know based on the data.' -> answered
Split the answer into claims
RAGAS Faithfulness, call 1. The judge rewrites the answer as short standalone statements, with names instead of pronouns, so each one can be checked on its own. This step decides what gets counted: a long answer with many small facts gets many claims.
The answer
Artists used: BLACKPINK; BTS - BLACKPINK — BOOMBAYAH (2016) - BTS — WINGS (2016)
4 claims
- One K-pop group is BLACKPINK.
- BLACKPINK released the song BOOMBAYAH in 2016.
- Another K-pop group is BTS.
- BTS released the song WINGS in 2016.
Prompt sent to the judge (RAGAS’s own, with a worked example) (1,822 chars)
Given a question and an answer, analyze the complexity of each sentence in the answer. Break down each sentence into one or more fully understandable statements. Ensure that no pronouns are used in any statement.
Please return the output in a JSON format that complies with the following schema as specified in JSON Schema:
{"description": "Structured output for statement generation.", "properties": {"statements": {"description": "The generated statements from the answer", "items": {"type": "string"}, "title": "Statements", "type": "array"}}, "required": ["statements"], "title": "StatementGeneratorOutput", "type": "object"}Do not use single quotes in your response but double quotes,properly escaped with a backslash.

Output: Check each claim against the retrieved chunks
RAGAS Faithfulness, call 2. The judge gets all 6 chunks joined together, plus the claims, and returns 1 if a claim can be inferred directly from the chunks, otherwise 0, with a reason. Under each verdict is the line in the chunks with the most words in common with the claim. This page finds that line, not the judge. Use it to check the verdict yourself.

No LLM here, just counting. Each square is one claim from step 6.
3 supported ÷ 4 claims = 0.75
A common rule of thumb: aim for 0.8 or above; under 0.6 means a real hallucination problem. But a low score is either an answer that adds facts, or a judge that missed one. Step 6 tells you which.
